Role of Fate in Macbeth

Consider the role of fate in Macbeth. The witches represent fate, and all of their prophecies about Macbeth come true. But is fate responsible for the violence/murder that ensues throughout the play? How much does fate truly control in the play? How responsible are the characters themselves? Also, did fate predict the violence in the play, or could it have been avoided?

  1. I believe that fate does play a large role in the violence that occurs in Macbeth. If you look back to the beginning of the story Macbeth didn't seem very violent and seemed very surprised when the witches gave him his prophecy. When things started to happen that made the prophecy true Macbeth seemed to become a victim to faith. Macbeth and his wife start to lose their sanity and the prophecy seems to take over their lives. I think that the prophecy was what made Macbeth act the way he did but he should still be held responsible for the murders that he committed.

  2. I do not believe that fate is to blame for the violence. The characters are guilty for their actions regardless if someone had given them a prophecy or not. It really just boils down to the raw insanity of the characters (Macbeth).

  3. I do not think that fate is the only cause of violence in this play, although it is heavily displayed throughout the story. The main characters, especially Macbeth, are to blame for the deaths of several people, including Duncan and Banquo. Nobody, except Lady Macbeth, urged Macbeth to commit these murders. Therefore, these deaths may not have been exemplified by fate. However, the prophesies may display fate because Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are not able to control them, they are only in the hands of the witches. Agreeing with Treazure, the prophecies may have caused Macbeth to commit these crimes, but overall, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are the ones to blame for the violence and murders of characters in the play.

  4. I think Macbeth could choose his fate based on whether he listened to the witches or not. I think once he was following their ideas, his ultimate fate was decided.

  5. I think that the characters themselves are to blame for the violence in the play. The prophecy did not state that Macbeth would become king through violence. He (and Lady Macbeth) interpreted it to mean such. Maybe the prophecy inspired him to be violent, but it did not force him to violence. He was fated to be king but he chose his own path to achieve that.
