State of Nature

Do you think a state of nature could ever work? Like what if for some crazy reason we went back to being nomadic. Do you think we would form civilizations and governments or would we find a way to live peaceably on our own?

  1. I think that it is human nature to preserve ourselves and the way we do that is by forming government (accepting the social contract). So there is no doubt in my mind that if we went back to being nomadic, it would only be a matter of time till civilization, and government rose up again.

  2. Yeah I agree with Carson. Like people always say, man is a social creature. People would end up interacting in some way and people with a common goal would join together and subconsciously form a social contract. Maybe they wouldn't form a government like we think of today but I do not think that people would just stay by themselves.

  3. I think that we would form a government and groups, because eventually, one can not rely just on oneself, because when a group of people come together, each individual has a different skill that can benefit the other members, if someone is alone, then they will only be able to survive on the one skill they have.

  4. I agree with Tyler. Yes, it would work, but only for a limited time. It is natural for people to be social and create groups to protect themselves better and create relationships. Thus, governments would spawn from tribal communities and other loose societies.

  5. I agree with Carson and Caroline. Men are naturally drawn to form governments. I don't think we would stay in a State of Nature for long. I don't think one person has the ability to survive completely on their own because we have been living in established societies for such a long time. We are dependent on the separate skills in order to survive and thrive as human beings.
