True love?

So what do you guys think about Jane and Mr. Rochester? Like a true Romantic, do you believe that love can conquer every obstacle? Or do you think that the differences between them (wealth, class etc.) will be too much to overcome?

  1. I think they are a good couple. It seems at times, like Mr. Rochester is willing to put aside their differences and allow himself to love her even though the Victorian society frowns upon it. He cares about her opinion, trusts her, and is able to confide to her. I don't think he really likes Blanche Ingram and was planning on marrying her. I think he was only spending time with her to make Jane jealous and gauge her reaction to see if Jane likes him. During the fortune telling scene, Mr. Rochester sees Jane for who she really is even when Jane won't admit/acknowledge those truths about herself. And, he kept asking for Jane's opinion on marriage and if she is interested in anyone. I think Jane and Mr. Rochester could be happy together if only Jane lets go of her insecurities and Victorian values. If she took a chance, a leap of faith, pursued her passions the way she would've done when she was younger, she could live a very happy life with Mr. Rochester.

  2. I LOVE Jane and Rochester! I think they are perfect together. Rochester seems to respect Jane and treat her almost as an equal, even though she's a woman and lower status than him, which I love him for. I think they're clearly made for each other, so I'm confident that fate will make it happen.

  3. I agree with Gabbi completely. To add on, I think that love can conquer every obstacle. In fact, it happens in the book!! Runway model Blanche gets bumped over for borderline broke governess Jane because of their character and emotion and Romantic similarities. I do not think the class difference will overcome them for the same reason.

  4. I find Jane and Rochester's relationship interesting. Although they appear to be equal, I feel as if Rochester makes Jane act his equal which in turn makes them unequal. He encourages (sometimes to the point where it seems more like forces) her to argue and insult him. He also went about making Jane fall in love with him in a very odd and pretty mean way. I believe that their love can conquer the divisions between their social status, but as we learned in tonights reading, that will not be the real test to their love.

  5. I also agree with Gabbi and Nick. I like Jane and Mr. Rochester a lot, and for the most part, I think Mr. Rochester treats Jane fairly. Like Gabbi, I like how he usually views her as an equal and sometimes, I think he views her above himself which I think is kind of nice! However, I also think it was wrong that Mr. Rochester kept the secret of Bertha Mason from Jane. You would think that they would tell each other everything about their pasts before getting married, but that clearly was not the case. I think that in the end, Jane and Mr. Rochester will figure it out and find their strong love for each other again.
