Why do modern day Mongols worship Genghis, and not Khubilai? Khubilai seems to be the one who globalized and was tolerant of the Chinese, whereas Genghis just wanted to conquer and kill.
In my opinion Genghis khan is worshiped among modern day Mongols due to his ability to unify the nomadic tribes of Central Asia. He demonstrated fearless leadership qualities in doing so, and could be seen as admirable for this. Genghis also unified much of Asia through his endless conquests. This demonstrates the strong determined personality that allows Genghis to serve as the "roots" of Mongolia. He gives the people an identity and something to look up to during adversity. His image was just just tarnished by the web of lies and misconceptions feeding his legacy; "Genghis Khan wasn't really a bad guy," said Elbegdorj Tsahkia, the Mongolian prime minister. "He just had bad press." Also Genghis treated Mongolians very fairly, so modern day Mongols might not care how he treated the Chinese.
Genghis Khan is worshiped probably because he started everything and Kublai was just following him. Kublai Khan was also considered more Chinese even though he was Mongolian. He was more focused and attracted to the Chinese and spent a lot of time in China. So he was more important to the Chinese than Mongolians because he wasn't too harsh on them like Genghis. Kublai was just finishing what is grandfather had started so Mongolians look up to Genghis.
Genghis Khan is probably worshipped, because he united the Mongols and made them this threatening force. Whereas most Chinese schools teach students that Kublai was Chinese. Genghis Khan is also the ancestor out of roughly 1 out of every ten men on the planet.
