Jane Eyre

Now that we've finished Jane Eyre, what do you think of the ending? Do you believe everyone ended up happy?

  1. When reading Jane Eyre, I thought that at the end Jane would end up being "free" and she would have everything she wished to have when she was in Gateshead. Instead, I believe that Jane didn't stay true to herself and she gave herself into society. She changed from being Romantic to a Victorian, and at the end she became a "slave" to Mr. Rochester.

  2. I believe the ending in Jane Eyre was a good ending that ended well for Jane. At the end of the book Jane returned to Mr. Rochester, which I think was exactly what she wanted.

  3. I don't think that Charlotte Bronte let herself, or Jane off the hook. I say this because Jane has had a hard life, going from an unloving family to Lowood then finding out she was just a mistress to Mr. Rochester. I think Bronte let the ending show how Janes "happy ending" wasn't actually happy, to let people contemplate how the society changed her.

  4. I believe that Jane did end up happy at the end of the book. Sure it can be argued that she said she was happy so many times at the end of the book because she was trying to convince herself that she was happy, but the alternative is maybe Jane was just happy and saying it so much because she was in such a high state of bliss. One of the reasons I think that Jane ended up happy at the end of the book was that she married Rochester. He may be crippled, burnt, blind, and ugly, but Jane still loved him. The entire time she was away he was in her thoughts. I find that at the end of the novel Jane ends up escaping society by living at Ferndean. My opinion is this way because Ferndean is in the middle of nowhere and it's surrounded by woods. This setting isolates Jane and Rochester from society and therefore extinguishes societies oppressive influence on Jane. Overall I think that Jane really did find happiness at the end of the book.

  5. I think Jane was happy by the end of the novel. She is happy because she decided for herself that she did want to be in that relationship. No one forced her or asked her, Jane made her own independent decision to go back to Rochester. Furthermore in this marriage Jane has more power and is not as opressed.

  6. The reason Jane is not oppressed is because Rochester is handicapped. Therefore he needs her in order to live his life. Jane has the ability to still do what she wants though because Rochester does not physically have that power over him. Jane chooses to be his wife. Therefore in the end everyone is happy.
