Bug Life

Considering what we know about Gregor's character, personality, and values, what do you think he would have done, in the situation he is in, if he hadn't turned into a bug? Do you think he would have come to his senses and finally moved out of the small apartment or do you think he would have stayed a prisoner of his horrible life and remained as the family income? If he would have stayed, do you think he would have attempted to change his family's ways or let them be dependent on him forever?
Also, in each scenario, what would his decision say about human tendencies in general? (For example, if he would have stayed, one could say that humans tend to choose family over social life.)

  1. I believe that his situation would have stayed the same for a long time before finally starting to deteriorate once Gregor finally realizes that his family was just using him. Like we talked about in class, if Gregor represents the proletariat while his family is the bourgeoisie, I will be like Marx and predict that Gregor will eventually rebel against his position in the family, and life.
I think that for Gregor, it has been ingrained in him that the family is the most important. However, it seems that, if he never metamorphosed, he would have eventually realized that the individual is important to decision making as well, and broken off and left his family without an easy source of income.

  2. I believe if he never turned into a bug his life would have never changed. He was so imbedded in his way of life that even after he turned into a gigantic bug he still thought about his boss and how this change would affect his job. I don't think that The Metamorphosis is an analogy for the Proletariat and the Bourgeoisie, because Gregor was perfectly happy being exploited by his family because he suppressed all of his other emotions into memorizing train schedules and work. To sum it up if he was never turned into a bug, nothing would have changed. He would probably work till the day he died working to support his family.

  3. I agree with both Darien and Andrew. We learned that Gregor didn't have a social life, which means he had very few to no friends. We also know that he was stuck in this job for at least another six years. But like Andrew said, Gregor was so set in his way of life that even after he was turned into a bug, he though about his job and boss, not about how he would get on with his life. Gregor would end up supporting his family through his whole life, either for paying off his family debts or because he wanted to support his sister and going to the school.
