Vladimir Lenin

Two views were discussed at the end of the Lenin documentary.  Some people think he negatively impacted Russia (setting up the communist regime), and others think he left a good legacy (helping the poor who suffered worse under the tsar).  The majority of people would agree he had many negative impacts.  Which side do you agree with? Was Lenin coming to power the best thing for Russia at the time? Should the Tsar still have been in power? Or would they have been better off with the Provisional Government that was established before Lenin?

  1. I think Lenin did some good and some bad for the government. By I'm glad that they got rid of the tsar (but killing him was unnecessary in my eyes) and that the provisional government was bad because they wanted to stay in the war even though there was no money and very limited resources. Lenins ideas to get out of the government and to let the farmers keep the money they earn from selling we're good things. But the killing and aggression that was shown during his reign was bad and ultimately set the stage for stalins killing-ness. So Lenin was both good and bad fort russia.

  2. I agree with Catherine. However, I feel everyone (tsar, provisional gov't, & Lenin) were violent and agressive. They all wanted fighting and bloodshed; and therefore in any scenario it's possible that Stalin still would have happened.

  3. I agree with Catherine too. I think it's a right decision to stop the war since Russia kept losing and had many soldiers died. With Lenin's coming to power, the lower class was less oppressed. They found their voice in politics. And their social positions had been risen. Lenin liberated the proletarians.

  4. Lenin did the most practical thing for the people of his time. He fulfilled the predictions that Marx had that the middle class would overthrow all. Communism reached Russia and it caused great economic and industrial growth. This can be seen in conflicts as early as World War 2, almost 20 years after his death, where his legacy helped Russia win World War 2.

    1. but he didn't fulfill the predictions of marx, it wasn't a rising of the proletariat to over through the bourgeoisie, it was bourgeoisie leading proletariat into revelation, and russia wasn't developed enough for a proper communist revolution to occur according to marx.

  5. While Lenin did help the Russians overthrow their oppressive government (the tsar), he then just insituted his own oppressive reign claiming it was for the good of the people. Yes, he did attempt to even out the classes and help the poor but that does not justify his random acts of violence. It's hard to say whether Russia would have been better off with the Provisional Government because it was only in power for a short time. It did want to stay in a war while Russia was having its own internal conflicts, but it had some justified reasons in doing so. I'm not sure which government was best for Russia but I think that the tsars, the Provisional Government, and Lenin all had both good and bad parts.
