I think the bug is hideous in appearance and so people around him will want to stay away. I also think that one of the main ideas of the book is labor, and maybe a bug is like a small worker in a large factory. Reading more may shed more light.
i think kafka mad Gregor a bug because most people find bugs repulsive, frighting, small and insignificant. he probably thought about these things and figured a bug would significantly alienate him from his family and society.
Yeah, I agree with Nick. A bug is useless, disgusting and powerless. People don't like bugs, obviously. This setting implies Gregor's gonna have a bitter life. His transformation would bring him a lot of disasters.
