1984: Parallels to our Society

Today in class, when we were talking about 1984, people seemed to be concerned that we could be living in a society like Oceania and never really be aware of it. I was wondering if you guys see any parallels between our western society and anything that would suggest that 1984 is not just another piece of anti-communist propaganda. Essentially, why might 1984 scare us as members of a western society?

  1. I think the book is scary because it could happen anywhere. Our own government has become more controlling every year. Just compare our lives to our parents! They had so much more freedom than we do. Even trying to get a drivers license is a lot harder than it used to be...my dad was just telling me how he rigged the system and got his when he was 14. My point is, I think we're slowly progressing towards a highly controlling government. Governments are easily corrupted and politicians are known for deceiving/brainwashing, so a reality like 1984 isn't that crazy

  3. I think it's very possible we could be living in a world like 1984. The government has made themselves more and more powerful by enforcing new laws and restrictions. Also I feel like a lot of Americans don't even know what's going on in our government. It was the same for most of the people of Oceania. As the government continues to grow our daily lives begin to change, and we have less freedom and have to be more careful.

  4. I think that ideals that are represented in 1984 have already been slightly introduced into our society. Especially with the PIPA and SOPA acts that were introduced to us. I feel like with any government there will always be people that will try to gain more and more control over the general population. This is why it is important for the people to keep an eye out for these things which is what I think 1984 is trying to tell us to do
