Alien Invasion

If an extraterrestrial species(i.e. not human), invaded the world in the 1700's, how do you think the Native Americans, Europeans, and Chinese would have reacted?

  1. Well to be quite honest, I believe it depends whether or not these aliens are of intelligence, meaning they can speak a language and have a civilization. If this were the case than I believe the Spanish would love these life forms because they'd prove to be intelligent and, as Aristotle would say, would be born to lead. The native Americans would be fond of these aliens, as long as they had their freedom and were not made slaves.

  2. To be honest, in some ways this did happen. Although the Europeans were humans, they may have seemed, due to of the numerous differences in culture, values, laws, religion (or lack of), like aliens to the natives. Like we saw in the illustration depicting one of the first interactions between the Europeans and natives, the Europeans basically invaded the natives land with their alien ideas and views and overpowered the natives culture. That being said, we can use all that we have learned about the interactions between natives and Europeans to answer this question.

  3. I believe that the Spanish, Chinese and aztechs would all have reacted differently. The spanish would have thought that the aliens were angels, and most likely have treated them as saviors. I do not know enough about the Chinese or Aztech religion to know what they would have seen the aliens as. This is assuming that the aliens were peaceful. Now, if they were not peaceful, I believe that they would be treated as such: the Spanish would most likely have thought of them as servants of the Devil and have responded with religion, again I don't know enough about the Chinese or Aztech religion to know what their version of demons are, but I'm sure they would have thought of them in basically the same way.

  4. I agree with Ella: I think that the Spanish were aliens to the Indians. The Indians had never seen white people, so for them, it was like us meeting tie-dye people now. Also, the Spanish wore lots of clothing, while (by most accounts) the natives did not always cover up. How would you act if a tie-dyed person was wearing a sheep on his body. Furthermore, the natives had never seen horses or guns. Even if you got used to tie-dyed people wearing sheep, how would you deal with their magical hovercraft/teleporters and shiny kill machines?
