Some of the myths and facts about slavery were very surprising to me. What were you're reactions to the facts and which ones stood out to you the most?

  1. I thought it was interesting that race was not associated with slavery until the 15th century because it connects to our conversation about Sepulveda vs. Las Casas. Hey EB what are your thoughts on this fascinating topic?

  2. Hey Bailey! That is an interesting topic. I think what surprised me the most was that slaves were not usually captured by kidnapping, but as prisoners of war. I think it is a common misconception that slaves were kidnapped by the Europeans and brought over to the New World, but they were actually brought over by war. I think another common misconception in this reading was that Africa was an undeveloped country; however, Africa was rich in culture.

  3. I agree! Some of the prisoners of war were actually used as slaves in Africa as well. Gee EB, thanks so much for sharing your thoughtful comment.

  4. It's also really interesting the percent of slaves that actually went to what is now North America!! It was a much less significant number than I expected.

  5. I was most surprised at how most African slaves were women and that the majority of African slaves in the New World were male. This shows that most African slave work was domestic, household work. On the other hand, African slaves in the New World worked mainly on plantations. I was also shocked that owners of Plantations in the New World worked slaves to the death, because they figured that it was cheaper than actually caring and providing for the slaves. The life expectancy of a Plantation slave was only 7 years. How sad is that!
