Gregor's family treated him pretty badly, but through everything he was still compassionate and kind and never seemed to be hurt. H died for his family. But Gregor seemed like a decently smart guy if he knew his family kept him for his money and was always treated bad, then why did he stay with them? He had a good job, he was intelligent and had plenty of money. why didn't he move out?
I think that, like everyone in the world, Gregor did have at least SOME love for his family. It's practically in our nature to love our parents, even though at times we might hate their guts. I think that maybe the reason he stayed was because he had some kind of sympathy for his family. Like Tyler said, he was a decently smart guy. He was intelligent enough to get past the horrible treatment of his family and accept it for what it's worth- that his parents pretty much depend on him to survive. Although it may not be acceptable, it is the truth and Gregor understands that they still are his family and they need to stick together.
ReplyDeleteI think there's also the obvious reason for why he didn't move out- he was a bug. People who are bugs don't do that well in the world. Also, we all know how self-conscious he was; he was almost obsessed with the way others viewed him. I don't think anything would make him want to move out into the real world.
Gregor probably loved his family because he is the one major character in the book that is kind hearted all the time and seems to have the best moral values. He also did not know his father was taking money and was under the illusion that he is working for his family and therefore, it is right. Overall, I think since he had the best moral values, he thought he was doing the right thing.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nick. Gregor did have the best moral values in the story. Other people seemed to have distorted social values. There's a sharp comparison between those two. Gregor kept the Victorian values: he loved his family and worked hard. While his family were influenced deeply by the capitalism. They were selfish and indifferent. The main reason he stayed with his family, I think, was that he cared about his parents and his sister.
ReplyDeleteLanlan and nick both have good points. I also think that Gregor had good values and that is shown through his wantin to stick by his family and paying off their debts. We don't know Gregory's life before he was turned into a bug, but it seemed as if he liked his family. I think that his sister and mother both cared for him before he was turned into a bug. Without having a social life, he doesn't really know what caring is because he deconstruct have any friends who care for him. So the only compassion he has ever known is his family, that's why he didn't want to leave them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nick and Evan. His morals were straight and he loved his family. He obviously repressed anything bad he felt towards them, which ate him up inside because once he couldn't distract himself with work he started sexually desiring his sister. I believe he was to insecure to move out. He loved his family and felt security in living with them. He loves security even being a traveling salesman because he always locks his door. Freud might even say he never broke the "most sacred love" connection with his mom that everyone has when they're little, which if he did break that connection it would have given him the motivation to move out.
