Porcupines?

Following up on the idea of the outer frame story, I found it very interesting that the first thing that popped into Artie's head when asked how the Israeli Jews would be portrayed was porcupines.  It sort of makes sense in that the Israelis are very protective of their nation as porcupines use their spines to defend their territory; however, there are many other options for what the Israelis could be drawn as.  What do you think the Israelis could be depicted as, and why would you think that?

  1. No offense meant to Israel, but I think depicting them as Porcupines is pretty darn accurate. Maybe Porcupines that like to instigate fights might be more accurate..

  2. Well, a porcupine is basically a really prickly, well-defended mouse. So... kind of makes sense? Also, Spiegelman is quite liberal, politically (he was a "hippie" in the early 70's), and I would guess that he is pro-Palestine--so it may also be intended as a subtly "barbed" critique.

  3. If he wanted to have nazis look good he should have made the Jews viruses and the nazis white blood cells and the polish red blood cells. This would make sense in that scenario in that nazis would be getting rid of the viruses or Jews.
