What did you guys think of the ending of Maus? Do you think that Artie progressed throughout the comic? How do you think the story changed the relationship between Artie and his father?

  1. I thought the ending of Maus was completely depressing. I cried. The part where Vladek reunited with Anja made me cry because I knew that he helped her survive the Holocaust only to have her commit suicide later on. I also thought the way he died was awful, because he was so proud of being capable and being a survivor, and as he was dying he was most ashamed of being unable to take care of himself. The worst part was that Artie was all Vladek had left, and their relationship was in shambles when he died. It seemed like they didn't progress at all, and Artie knew that, based on his reaction to Vladek's death. The story brought them closer together, but it also made Artie feel the most guilty after Vladek died. That said, I think it was good that Vladek got to tell his story before he died, and I think he would have been proud of Artie's book.

  2. I agree with Gabbi. The ending was extremely sad. It seemed like Vladek was forgetting Anja's tragedy because he tells Artie that they lived "happy, happy, ever after." When he calls Artie "Riechev" it is sad for the both of them. It shows that Vladek desperately misses his first son, but it also makes Artie feel like he'll never be good enough for his father.
