Relationship between Vladek and Artie

Now that we have come pretty close to finishing Maus, do you think that Artie and his father have a good "father to son" relationship? Why/Why not?

  1. Artie and his dad have a strange relationship. I think they love each other, but they don't know how to relate to one another. Vladek can't let go of his experience in the Holocaust, so he makes Artie feel guilty about his cushy life, which then makes Artie resent him. Also, neither of them have gotten over Anja's suicide, and the guilt and responsibility tear them apart. Although this is rather pessimistic, I don't think they could ever get past these issues and have a good relationship.

  2. I agree with Gabbi. I think Artie and Vladek do love each other but have trouble relating. Vladek went through hell and just in general has a really tough-love personality. Vladek always seems to be telling Artie that he is better than he is and doesn't seem like a very openly loving father. I can understand (sometimes) why Vladek acts in such a way but I can also understand why Artie would not want to be around his father that much. They both are still traumatized by Anja's suicide and I think them being together just makes them remember her. I also agree with Gabbi in that I think their relationship has been too messed up for too long for them to ever totally get back to normal. Even if they did get over their pasts I still think that their personalities would just lead to more conflict.

  3. Well they love each other like the ideal father and son should, but their relationship was really tough. Artie only cared about his father's story at first because he thought it would bring the answers about his mother and would make a good story (he even includes things his father did not want him to). His father sees Artie as the only good thing to come from the war and wants him to be perfect. He tells him what to do and even throws away his clothes and tries to make him be the best son possible. I think Arite eternally resolved it and felt like their relationship on Earth ended well.
