Abraham and Giannotto in The Decameron

On pages 38-42 in The Decameron, Abraham ended up seeing the beauty of the Holy Spirit despite the corruption of the church, whereas Giannotto tried to hide it from his friend. Why do you think Giannotto thought Abraham would not be able to see the holiness in the church that he professed himself to be righteous?

  1. It could be possible that maybe Gionotto did not see the holiness in the church himself. If we can assume that he was born into a Christian family, it might be that Gionotto had only been looking on the surface and seeing the corruption of the church, but blindly following it. When Abraham studied the church and was able to look past the corruption, he saw the holiness and was convinced to convert to Christianity.

  2. Possibly due to the rant that Abraham goes on and on about the unholy and corruptness in the town.

  3. Gionotto only saw the corruption he did not go into detail like Abraham, so Abraham was able to look past the corruption and see what Christianity mainly was. Gionotto did not go into such detail like Abraham so it was very unlikely for him to see what Abraham understood.
