Women in The Decameron

Do you think that women felt like they should not have rights, as suggested in The Decameron, pages 18-19, in 1353?

  1. I believe that the Decameron suggests that woman were simply dependent on men for survival, though they may not have possessed all of the rights men had, I don't think this is the core message. I think they simply relied on men for their income and lively hood.

  2. I agree with David. The women may not have many rights, but I believe the reason they where so scared by the idea was because they would be with out the protection of men. They were probably afraid of bandits, and thieves attacking them on their journey. Also, considering that the thieves where running rampant, because the law was not being inforced because the plague had wiped out many of the people in charge, it is not surprising why the women were so afraid to leave the city with out the protection of men.

  3. I disagree with the statement that women didn't have many rights. In the packet it was saying how women were allowed to become doctors so this kind of suggests that men saw women more as equals but not completely. I believe that it is actually the women who think they have no power. Instead of being strong and independent, the women in the church talk about how they are not trustworthy and need men for guidance. Therefore I believe that women were the ones that were putting themselves down.

  4. I believe, through Madonna Filippa's case on pages 463-464 of the Decameron we are able to see that woman have power in society and are able to influence it as they see fit.
