Do you agree with Galileo? Or do his discoveries indeed go against the Bible? How so? Based on that, is he a heretic? Or is he simply going against the ignorant (and false) beliefs held by those in power at the time (the Catholic Church), who simply didn't understand God's creation fully? How did this impact society's view of Galileo's discoveries?
I do agree with Galileo in that his findings do not go against the bible. Galileo's main point is that God gave us the ability to think, hypothesize, and discover new things about the world we live in(which God also created.), therefore, why shouldn't he use it to explore the universe? Galileo argues that the purpose of the bible isn't to inform the reader about the universe and astronomy, the bible has a bigger purpose. Galileo believed that the powerful people of the papacy were taking the word of The Lord too literally. I think that in a way, the priests at this time were in denial that maybe man had discovered something that isn't taught to him through the bible. I think that many of these people believed Galileos theories but were too scared by these radical new ideas. Galileo was a brilliant man unfairly persecuted by the public and the church for his thinking that was far ahead of his own time.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Galileo. I think that he was right when he stated that people were misinterpreting the bible and using it to their advantage. There is no one way to interpret the bible. Galileo was just trying to prove his theory and his thoughts were very modern. He did not commit heresy. I think that the popes and everybody else just wanted to be right. I don't think they cared about Galileo's theory. People didn't want to believe that the Bible could be wrong
ReplyDeleteI believe that Galileo's beliefs where not heresy. Pico says that humans have the capability of being animals, or angels, and that humans decide which they will be more like. If god is able to give humans the decisions on wether to be animal, or angel, why would god not have given humans the ability to explore the universe? There is not much information in the bible about astronomy, so how did the church even know if Aristotle's version was correct?I think the church was false, but acted as many people would have. Galileo had told them that one of the biggest thing they believed was not true! something that for a 1000 years of more they had believe, when they found this out, they where shocked that something the church (but not the bible) had told them, and past generations, was actually false.
