Galileo Trial

Of the six documents we read for the Galileo trial, which do you think is the most supportive of Galileo and which one is the least supportive?

  1. I would say the first and second document are the least supportive and really against Galileo. The first is his admonition and his warning to stop his said opinions. The next is the formal document from the church that tells him about his ban on his publications. The third document is the letter from the Cardinal. I would say that this letter isn't as threatening to Galileo but it still tells him that he is wrong and can't defend his ideas. The fourth is Galileo himself describing his texts. This can not really be seem as against or for him since it his own work. The fifth document is his own dialogue, so it's along the same lines as the previous work. Galileo is trying to protect himself and yet get his work out there. The sixth document is the Q&As at his testimony; his answers really shows how strong he was. So I think the ones that were most supportive were done by himself or to his doing.

  2. I would say that the last document is really unsupportive for Galileo because he lied. This shows how he was unsure of himself and also how desperate he was. I would say that the fourth document in which he uses simplicio was the most supportive cause it shows how he was being hypothetical.

  3. I think all of the documents had their advantages and disadvantages. Each one of them had their way they they seemed to support Galileo but they also had many flaws. For example documents 4 and 5 were written by him so you could argue they are biased. The last documents Galileo arguably lies, and the other documents were not very just neither. Therefore all the documents seem to disprove and support Galileo in their own ways
