Renessaince Art

In the paintings we looked at in class the other day, two of the paintings were made to draw your eye towards Heaven and God.  Why did the other artist choose to make the connection between the mother & son instead of  to Heaven and God like others?

  1. I think the artist wanted to make the story of Jesus accessible/applicable to everyone. So, instead of drawing the viewer's eye towards Heaven (an idea that surely intimidated many people, including Christians), the artist made the subject the connection between the mother and son (which a lot of people could relate to.)

  2. Also on page 57 of the Human Odyssey it states that Renaissance artists wanted to bring the viewers attention to the beauty of the present time period. This would explain the choice of background in the painting, the painting drawing the viewers eye to the connection between mother and son, and also the lack of a heavenly light at the top of the painting. These paintings really show the development of Renaissance thinking and it's impact on art and artists.

  3. It could also be representing how during the Renaissance people had this "carpe diem" spirit. They wanted to live their lives to the fullest and not worry so much about the after life. So, instead of the artists making the heavenly connection, he made the connection between man because people were looking to themselves and other humans for what to do instead of asking God.
